I've had my LS1 for a little over 3K miles now.. I changed the oil about 2 months ago and yesterday my low oil light came on.. WTF I park on a new cement slab so if it was leaking at all I would see it, but it hasnt leaked any at home or at work. Is this normal? :dunno:

Some use more than others. Do the PCV mod or a catch can. that may help some.

My 2001 Z28 uses approximately 1 qt. every 1,500 miles. It's used that much since it was new. I have 82,000 miles on the clock and it still runs great. I've just come to accept it.
What kind of oil are you using?

Do the oil catch can mod. It'll keep the oil out of your intake.

You will notice that the more time your engine spends above 3000 RPM's it will use more oil....
....PSJ:)
Same problem here. I've got a 2002 SS. It had about 8500 miles on it and I'm sitting in line about to stage at the track when the low oil light comes on! Well the idiot in front of me hits the wall so I had time to get out and check. Yep about a quart low. I changed the oil about a month before that so I never imagined I would be a quart low.

Where have you been? This has been a long standing issue. Yes some burn oil. But most are M6's that people rev higher.

Changing to Mobil 1 0w-40 solved my issues... I was burning around 1 quart every 5000 miles.

Change your PCV or do the mod.... and keep your rpms down if you dont' wanna burn oil, just like what everyone else said.

either do the catch can or start complaining to the dealer! I use probably about 1/2 quart every 3K which isnt that bad compared to most;)
catchcan, ls6 pcv valley cover mod, or !pcv system and run a breather, different oil blend (hit up patman for that). those are your options.

I forgot about the oil. I went with 4 qts of 10w30 and 2qts of 15w50.

Maybe I have a freak car but:
I check my oil every week or so, and it has almost 70k miles on it. To this day I have never been even a hair low on oil in between oil changes. I use synthetic...
Also, not to be a post hijacker, but what is the best oil that I can put in my car. I run synthetic but people are telling me to go Mobil 1 synthetic. Can someone tell me exactly what oil to get for my 99 Z. Thanks!

you guys should see what I pulled out of my oil catch can lastnight :( it was almost full of water. I don't know where the water came from either because it didn't have any antifreeze mixed in with it, it was pure water with some oil mixed in. I think I'm going to do the LS6 pcv mod

I've only driven it a little over 3K miles. And from what I hear.. when its down to the low oil light its about 2-3 qts low. :( I didnt think it would drink that much oil in 3K miles.. Ohh well I changed it last night and we'll see how it goes.

Neither our old Camaro SS nor our Corvette used more than a qt between changes (3000mi), both M6 cars, and both raced extensively. But a lot of cars do.
GM redesigned the rings in 2001, but still some cars still use oil.
I use Syntec and it seems to make more oil pressure and use less oil than Mobil 1.

Thats what I was thinking when I read this. That seem very excesive for that little milage. I would complain about it.
I use 10w30 M1 and haven't noticed any oil lose between up to 5,000 mile oil changes.

The water you are seeing is the by-product of combustion that didnt make its way out your exhaust.
Ohmyneck...you'll probably have to switch to a mixture of oil weights. Maybe try what airmanb2b did "4 qts of 10w30 and 2qts of 15w50"

condensation is pretty common in the crank case if you're making short trips, live in a humid area, and dont' make long trips to burn it off. Make a few hwy. runs and check from there.

If your engine is using oil it is going by the rings. The catch can mod will not stop this, it only traps oil from the crankcase to the intake. Some people have complained about excessive sludge build up inside their engines because of the catch can. They claim the restriction of the can does not allow the PCV system to remove the vapors from the crankcase adequately.

I'm a '98 A4, lid only and run Amsoil 5/30. My LS1 doesn't burn a drop of that stuff. It did burn like 1/4 quart every few months when I was running Mobil1 5/30. I think Amsoil is the trick!?

Well like you I used to burn maybe 1/4 in 3000 miles, but since going with Castrol 0w-30 I have no further issues either.
So a better oil is the trick.

The problem is from an overbore in the #2 cylinder and the incorrect rings. Most of the people that have excessive burning issues also have "piston slap".
Options are:
Aftermarket block
Change oil that you are using
PCV mods
All of the above.

I had the low oil light come on once or twice on me. Checked the oil and it was fine. I was in need of a change shortly after it came on anyway so I went ahead and did it. I keep my car over 4k ALOT. Even more so when its rainly season here in florida. (I love fooling around in the rain. :yup: )
I havent had to many problems with mine burning oil. The only problem I hear now is it sounds like I have a bent pushrod. But it only started making the noise after I changed the oil!!. So I dont know what it is. Still runs perfect. Its just louder now. And I can hear it inside the car now too. I'm worried, but if I blow it up oh well. I'll just rebuild it.

Very true, high RPM low load uses more oil. Keep the RPMs down when you're not running hard and you'll see a big difference.

He speaks the truth.
Also...watch for over-bore in cylinder #1.
Years ago, I had my original engine in my WS6 replaced because of piston slap.
car only had 2,900 miles on it
and a fukkin' crate motor that also started to knock
I couldn't stand it anymore...so I sold it.
