View Full Version : Questions about timing
First question: on my Autotap scans I see Timing and KR numbers. Is the Timing value the actual value or is it the value before KR? Example: 28* timing and 2* KR: am I running 28* or 26*?
Second question: with a K&N FIPK filter my LTFT are around 6 – 8 and the timing is about 25* at WOT (and no KR). I went back to the stock filter: LTFT are about 1 – 2 and the timing is about 28* at WOT (and also no KR).
The LTFT is an average of cells 4 – 16.
Now: according to many sources the timing at WOT should be 28 – 30 for best performance, this is fine with the stock filter. Is it lower with the K&N because of the higher LTFT?
Will I see a noticeable power increase going from 25 to 30* timing?
Thanks - Stefano

Your LTFT shoud only be 0 at WOT, nothing else regardless of what filter you use.
yep... I'm planning to install a MAFT to get them there where I want...
Is there a relationship between LTFT and timing?

Not that I am aware of. But your base cruise tune will effect your WOT performance. That is why you want to tune your base first, let it learn it, then tune your WOT. Also make sure you are above 1/4 tank of gas when doing so.
well well... try and error...
1/4 tank because of eventual air sucked in the fuel pump?

I have read that with less then 1/4 tank of gas the car will go into the low octane timing. I have yet to verify this but a little FYI from what I have read.

what year is your car? newer years seem to get less timing.
also - use cells 6-14 for your ltrims.
as stated - tune ltrims to zero or slightly negative before tuning wot. if ltrims are positive - they will stay at that number during wot because the pcm thinks the engine is running lean and is dropping extra fuel in.
Is the Timing value the actual value
that is your timing. if you get kr - you will see your timing drop soon after the kr occurs. sorry i don't have any good logs here with me - when i get home i'll post you a pic so it's easier to see ;)
My LS1 is 1998...
Fuel cells... sure! it was 6-14!!! Sory, I wrote 4-16:o
Smiley: is there any link between LTFT and timing, to your knowledge? After I installed the stock filter the LTFT went back to normal values, at the same time I had a better timing...
Same fuel, same wheater conditions...

not sure - but many things can effect timing. kr is the easiest to see and point out. i'll check the book when i get home tonight.
with a '98 car - you should have the higher timing numbers. 28 would be good for you to shoot towards.
