How do they stack up against each other as for as performance?

LT1 has a wider powerband and makes more overall power.

the l98 has more torque, both engines are basically equal .only the lt1 has a better intake design........

TPI makes lots of torque and some horsepower(really nice low end), LT1 makes more horsepower and some torque(better @ high rpms)........

L98's are torque monsters but LT1's overall are faster

stock for stock

My 89 GTA ran 9.3 in the 1/8th and my 94 LT1 ran a 8.9 (both cars had 50k on them)

Both were on street tires and 2.0 60's. I can't remember what the traps were though.

is the definition of a torque monster a motor that makes 278whp and 371wtq? no reason for alot of torque except for the bragging rights to having something that does nothing in the vehicle it is in. big deal. a mountain of tq does not make a car fast, but a mountain of hp does:) lt1 has better heads in addition to the better intake.

^alot of people would disagree with you.
i would much rather have a car with 278hp/371tq than a car with 371hp/278tq. with 278/371 you would kill the car with 371/278 off the line and you would be so far ahead it wouldn't matter that they crossed the finish line going faster.

While I agree with you, an LT1 with 371hp has more than 278 tq. :drive:

you are right, i was just making a point about hp vs. tq

We have made L98's run faster than LT1's several times with just a couple of slight mods. SLP runners with siamesed base and ported heads as well as a good tune and your right there with them if not ahead. So the LT1's aren't a whole lot faster than the L98s if you just address the intake/heads a little bit.

The issue with L98s is the extreme long runner design, which while making great torque, severely limits airflow at higher RPMs. An L98 is not going ot make much puwer up top.

Well, I got the answer I needed. My brother has an 85 vette with ported runners, intake and heads, but stock cam and stayed even with a 94 z28 that was pretty much stock. I think if you change that intake it would be a different outcome. The L-98 does feel good driving around town though.

Well as far as they stack up i just tested this last night.A friend of mine has a 91 T/A with the L98 with some factory slp options. My girlfriend has a stock 93 Lt1 formula 6 speed. He wanted to race to see where he stood so last night we lined them up.He had me a bit due to spinning in forst.By 3rd i went by him like i was going 10 MPH faster than him and i put a few cars on him before a curve came up.But he also blew his tranny out during the race so it could have been a little closer.I hated beating a third gen with it .I feel like such a traitor:( :)

OK let's do a quick comparison.

83-92 5.0 TPI -- HP = 165-230 Torque 240-300
87-92 5.7 TPI -- HP = 220-245 Torque 330-345
93-97 LT1 ------ HP = 275-285 Torque 325
98-02 LS1 ------ HP = 295-325 Torque 335-345

the 240 tq isn't a TPI... TPI305 --295 -300 rated.. about 330+ with ignition timing and the L98 cam...

The 350's

330-345 rated
350-390 on the dyno rear wheel
