View Full Version : Motor is hurt, but I'm impressed...

Well last outing at the track my car steadily droped trap speed all day while the air got better. Total of 3 MPH. Well I did a compression test today to see which cylinders are letting go since the stock bottomend has 90,000 miles on it.
Well I found one of the weirdest things to date of any motor I've looked at. The spark plug in the #6 cylinder took a crap... one hell of a crap! The center electrode separated from the body of the plug dropping the ceramic and metal into the cylinder! Needless to say the compression was down for that cylinder, LOL.
As an added bonus the #3 cylinder has coolant in it... most likely the head gasket.
I actually drove the car to New Orleans this week (156 miles round trip) not knowing what was going on, just thinking it was a little worn out, LOL! Gotta love the LT1.
Hell after finding all this today, I toped off the radiator, replaced the bad plug and drove the car home from the shop... try that with an equally hurt LS1. :2guns:
Time for a rebuild... just need $$$ and decide on a 355 or 383... cranks are damn near the same price.

Yep and cost is an issue here. Now that I'm not working in a refinery anymore I have to actually watch what I spend. :help:
I defineately want a forged crank since I spin the piss out of my motor. I looked around on e-bay last night and found quite a few affordable 4130 forged Eagle cranks. No price difference between 3.48 & 3.75 stroke. If I'm going to spend X amount of dollars I might as well get more cubes for the buck.
I've heard both good and bad stuff about Eagle products, but from what I see it's almost like the Ford-Chevy deal... just a matter of personal preference.
I'd love to have a Callies crank given the RPM I turn, but at that cost I'd be parked till late this year. Both 95Formula and I have been spinning the stock crankshafts to 7,000 without issues, so a good forged crank should be a good bet for longevity.

Andy, on the 396 LT1 deal... I've really only seen one actualy run it's ass off. There is a guy south of here (guy litterally lives in the swamp) running one in a 69 Camaro... it's BRUTAL! Last outing at the track he had to get off of it at the 1,000' mark for whatever reason and still went 9.4 @ over 140... all motor  He's the guy that built 95Formula's tranny... very cool and knows his stuff. He's about to put a Gen 6 DFI on the car... full pass with that and that LT1 will be in the 8's!

no shit, the minimal gain over the 383 is easily made up with a custom grind cam and the right head combo. I choked when I priced the Callies forged crank at $1,500.00 compared to a forged 383 for 1/3 the price.

ARE has made some significant changes over the last little while.

I'd consider talking to Nick over there.

Hey Steve I bought a GM steel crank from a ZZ4 engine. IT is a forged steel crank and has a one piece rear main. I was going to use it but found an awesome deal on a complete 4-bolt main LT1 with 8kmiles on it! and I bought it instead and i will just be installing my heads/cam setup on it. So I paid $200 for it and it's fresh and ready to put in a LT1. I am asking $200 and we could meet up at SCD if you want it otherwise I am just going to keep it for later ;) LMK if your interested. Later Clint

Thanks for all the leads on parts guys! Clint I've decided to go the 383 route since I can now get all the stuff through TR real cheap and there is no difference in price between 3.48 & 3.75
I'll pass on the info to Tim H about that ZZ4 crank, I'm pretty sure he's looking for one.
Now I just need to find one more LT4 head to make a set, LOL.

If you haven't gotten the crankshaft yet, I'd reccomend 4340 steel, as it is a more suitable material for this application.
