'98 monsoon vs 2k1 monsoon

Are the decks identical.

A friend just installed an older model monsoon in his car because the original in his '01 had a few buttons not lighting up.

He installs an older model that supposedly works perfectly and now there is NO lights on the deck.

Is there a different illumination wire to deal with???

Im pretty sure the 98 ones are different. I vageuly remember something about the 98 ones not being able to control the CD changer. There could be other differences, but I dont remember them off the top of my head.
