View Full Version : Strange Problem:

I dont know if you guys know what this is but:

When it is around 20 deg. outside (always below freezing) and my car is parked, and I put it in drive and imediatly turn the wheel and move forward, it sounds like I am running over bottles or snow or something. I hear this wierd crunching noise and it is really bothering me. However after it does it ONE time it stops and doesnt do it again untill after it sits there for a while.

Any ideas? This problem only lasts for about a second when i turn the wheel and move forward ONLY in really cold weather as far as I can tell, but then again it only started doing it this winter so I wouldnt really know. It is my daily driver (only have to drive like 2 miles to work) so I dont have the option of parking it for the winter.

Thanks

I would check that every think in the front suspension is greased well.

On a different note.... I do not mean this as a flame at all, but it is hell on a car to only drive it for 2 miles to and from work.
I would have to ride around the block a few times till everything got warmed up...

Only going short distances does not heat the impuritys out of the oil and can do damage to the main bearings and such.

The FedEx bearings, however, handle it fine

Sorry I exagerated the milage a little, its actually about 5 miles to get to work, and it is a steep windy road... I let the car warm up for 10 min before I even drive it so it should be ok right?

I will drive it till it dies, then fix it and drive it till it dies, over and over till the camaro thing is out of my system, god knows how long that could take....

Yes that is a little better ;)
do make sure you let all the fluids come to operating temps as much as you can.

Now go :drive: her :D

How about Ice. Maybe condensation freezes and then cracks when you turn the wheel. I am from Florida so what do I know.

I wondered about that, it could totally be the case, but I dont know what to do to find out... I guess if my wheels go flying off and I die it wont matter much at that point...

Thanks guys for helping

are all of your bushings stock? harder polyurethane bushings make lots of noise when its cold.

Im new to the car thing, I dont even know what bushings look like and I have no way to tell if they are stock or not. Any help there?

unless they are a color other than black, you probably will not be able to tell form looking at them.

When I take the wheel off the shocks or whatever are bright orange, and the guy who had them before me painted the calipers orange too, it looked like hell...

Does this mean they are aftermarket shocks or are those bushings or what? Sorry for the ignorance...

stock shocks are orange. there really is no way to tell....but i would bet that is whats making the noise.

You'll get different opinions on this, but being under zero load, the car will take quite a while to warm up. Idle it off and keep it at a lower rpm and the load from moving the car will warm up the engine much faster than letting it sit to warm up.

As far as your cracking noise, take a peek in the power steering reservoir & see what the fluid looks like

Also, look at the surface of the rotors. The brake pads should clear off ice with one rotation of the tyre/wheel assy.

Just more shots in the dark.
