View Full Version : CAR STEREO GUYS: How hard is it to install a stereo?

My gf wants a new CD player/radio in her car since the factory CD player stopped working
She has a 1995 Toyota Camry
I wanna get her a cheapo Kenwood CD/MP3 player, and I'd like to install it myself. No need to install new speakers, since she isn't much of an audiophile.
How hard is it to install your own stereo? I know I'm going to need a mounting kit. What other parts will I need? :dunno:
Thanks in advance :)

If you're not color blind, and can work a soldering iron....or crimp and butte connectors you can have it done in under an hour easily your first time. Hardest part is figuring out how to unbolt the dash :yup:

Well I know crutchfield.com sends you install instructions when you buy a h/u through them.
/me shrugs
Not the cheapest place but it came with everything I needed for my truck. I ended up looking on the s10 forums also for help. Try doing that :) Or do what Evyl said in the first damn place and post in the mobile electronics section :p homo.

I was checking out Circuit City's website and they suggest that I get 2 wiring harnesses.
- 1 vehicle wiring harness (specific to the car)
- 1 radio wiring harness (specific to the brand of head unit you'll have)
This is what Circuit City's website says:
It has a plug on one end that inserts into the back of the radio, and a universal plug on the other end that connects to the Metra vehicle wiring harness.
I guess they suggest that so that it makes it really easy to install, and everything just plugs in.
I suppose I don't really need 2 harnesses. I could just get the one vehicle harness and connect the wires myself with butt connectors? :dunno:
Sorry for all the noob questions, I just want to do it right the first time :)

Moving to the appropriate forum.
That car is easy. All you need is the harness. The radio will bolt into the factory brackets. To take it out just take off the trim around the radio, then 4 10mm bolts hold it in. After that just take out the 4 screws that hold the factory radio to the brackets. Then reverse the steps and wire up the plug.
