View Full Version : Did they send the wrong thermostat?

Installed what was supposed to be a 178* thermostat along with an oversize radiator. Went for a long cruise last night, but when driving along at 50-60 mph, my average coolant temps were 160-165! Outside air temp was around 65*. Did they send me a 160 by mistake? No fan programming was done and I'm running a 66/33 mix of water/dexcool + 1 bottle Water Wetter.

Since you have no fan programming, then it sounds like the wrong one was sent.

I have to agree with Blacker.
you can test it by submerging the thermo in a pt of water. use a meat thermometer and note what temp the thermo pops open at.

Thanks guys, this is probably what I'm going to do. The vendor (Vinci Performance) claims its due to the built-in bypass on the thermostat along with the oversized radiator I'm running. Sounds like bs to me.

That sounds right to me.

That's possible. (the bypass being the cause.)
A thermostat is to control minimum temperature. A bypass can negate that ability significantly, which you're seeing.

The radiator should have nothing to do with the engine operating temperature. The thermostat still controls the flow of coolant at a specified temperature. The extra capacity radiator allows more coolant to be cooled. What brand of thermostat do you have? I have the Hypertech and the bypass looks to be the same size as the stock unit.
