View Full Version : Buddy of mine took his GTO to the track
gordosz28
03-15-2004, 07:30 AM
He owns a performance shop in Oklahoma and bought a GTO and took it too the track sunday. I believe its bone stock and this is what he had to say his times was.
The GTO ran a best of 14.2 at 98MPH. Not impressive at all.
That thing needs to go on a diet. It weights around 3750lbs stock.
He has a 30th and I have no doubt he knows how to drive. Is this an accurate number for the GTO stock?
Please no flaming the Driver or the car. If thats the case I will delete this thread.

A4 or M6, I have an A4 and my SOTP-o-meter tells me thats about right. I think the M6s are probably faster, some one around here ran a 13.3 or so with an M6

Sounds pretty close to what Derf was running in his. He only ran 1/8 mile, but his 1/8 times sound close to these 1/4 mile times. I think he ran 9.30@78mph. Pretty close, I wonder if Nickvee got a factory freak?
BlueGoatDvr
03-15-2004, 10:33 PM
Derf hit the 13's though right?
I was only running a 1/8 mile.
Got 9.30 as my best time at about 79 MPH. My 60' was close to 2.3. I was spinning the tires and hopping the wheels all the way through 1st and 2nd getting that time.
But it was my first time ever at the track. I had never once launched a car down a track ever in my life before that day.
I was slow because I can't drive well yet. But I still was in the ~14.0 second range if you translate it to the 1/4 mile.
With some practice launching, I know I can get down into the high 8's in the 1/8 and solid 13's in the 1/4. The car had a lot more than I could get out of it.
Nick's was no factory freak. He just knows how to drive a lot better than I do.

I just ment the MPH was close, because 78mph in the 1/8 will get you around 98-100 in the 1/4.
I wasn't trying to say your car was slow. I am sure it is capable of much better times once you get some experience.
:D :D :D :D
BTW..........gordo, is your friend a BIG BOY, you know like 250-300lbs or more. Could explain it, then again maybe its just a shit track, we have one here in KC;)

Yeah, that's what I was trying to imply. Considering how I drove it, I'd have to believe that Gordo's buddy may not have been able to get the most out of his car either.
But it could have been track prep problems too. I've seen differences in track prep knock half a second off a car on the 1/8 tracks. That would only get worse for the 1/4 mile.
I'll be anxious to see how he does as he works on the car. Some drag radials and a little weight reduction will go a long way in that car. Maybe some rear suspension changes would make it easier to hook.

14s is horrible for a GTO.theyre not 1/4 mile monsters but even autos will run alot better than that.
get some more practice itll run lower.

Hmmmm. I don't know. Maybe it's his launch. I'd be interested in his 60' times. If you look at my 1/8 mile mph it was only 79mph. I left at idle and slipped the clutch out and eased into the throttle fairly quickly. First run I spun wildly, by the 3rd one I had minimal tire spin and no wheelhop. I also speed shifted that mofo, no granny shifting. Shifted at or near 6000 rpm. I need a shift light. The car really pulls hard at around 3500-4000 rpm. My first run was a 13.6, but the 3rd was my best at 13.3. What can I say. I also lowered my rear are pressure to 20lbs. Now some say it doesn't make a difference when you do that. I feel that it does. I also avoided the water box and doing a burnout. Heating street tires imo does no good, the compound is to hard to effectively heat up properly.
Do I have a factory freak? Highly doubtful. I don't know, maybe the timers were off. :D
1st run 13.6@103
2nd run 13.45@104.
3rd run 13.3@104

Those are damn good 60ft's nikivee for street tires.:drive:
You are really making up some ground on the second half of the track also, going from 79mph to 104mph is quite a top end charge.
Driver ability is defiantly the most important aspect of drag racing a manual transmission car at a drag strip. And you seem to have that covered.

Thats also with me and I weigh 250lbs.
Thats the only run I drove it. The rest of the day I drove the 30th.
The rest of the day my partners wife drove it. She drove it about 10 times. I think she only got a best of 14.2.
I think if I was to get some more runs in it with spare tire and jack removed I could hit high 13's.

Got to love the top end of the LS1. I used to pull 2.1 in the 60ft in my 93 Formula A-4, but the best it would hit through the 1/4 was 14.10:mad:
Nobody has brought this up yet I think, but the Gto must have a different/bettter clutch. Certianly better than my 99:mad:
I tried feathering the clutch a few times and it was useless. Could not get it to hold for shit.

It weighs about 3900 lbs with out me. I weight 250lbs.
That was not the best run we could have gotten. The front crank seal walked out and got oil on the supercharger belt, which made it slip then come off.

We also forgot to turn down the hal shocks. We left them at 5 front and back.
I think we could have gotten high 10's with a good run and shocks adjusted.

ASSUMING you have your facts straight, he is either incredibly ignorant or (more likely) referring to the 421/Wanger's/CAR&DRIVER "ringer car." THAT ran low 13s - STRIPPED and with a 421 in it.
Go read the WANGER'S interview in the new issue of HEMMING'S MUSCLECAR. He specificially states that the Level 1 Royal package yielded a "high 13 second car" (in 389 PRODUCTION cars). And he's right - assuming the exhaust was dropped.

I live in OKC and have a new (05) GTO. Previously, I've ran the 1/4 at Thunder Valley (I'm assuming that's where your friend went?). The track conditions at T.V. really change from one week to the next. The track prep can be really great one week and crummy the next. I've seen 0.3 to 0.4 seconds variation from one week to the next, same car, same mods, same tires, etc., same weather (within 10 degrees). All of the diff was in 60 foot times. By comparison, my individual runs on any single given night only varied slightly.
I haven't had the chance to get my goat to T.V. yet, but look forward to it!
As far as weight mods go, you can remove the spare/jack/etc. and also remove the front skid plate (not recommended for long-term). The skid plate weighs exactly 15.2 pounds (without bolts). I've also heard that the rear fuel tank brace weights quite a few pounds. However, I don't know much about whether or not it's "critical." I just know some folks have removed it.
Any additional weight reductions get tricky and/or expensive. It's probably easier to lose a couple of pounds by eating ex-lax the night before :p

I dont get it. You have a 6.0 L and its not even able to get into the 12s stock. I know the ca rmaybe new, a little porky, etc, but come on, 400hp, . I dont know, I still want an 05. The times people are cranking out are dissapoiting though.
Makes me think about the 2003 Cobra. Now thats a 1/4 monster.
Did you even bother looking at how old this thread is? I think his was a 2004.

DOH
Anyhoo, the first time I took mine to the track, I left the lights at idle, let the clutch out and mash the gas. Anything else would result in bad wheelhop or smoke.
Got 2.3 60's
and 13.5 at 106 averages

Best so far @ ETown last fall was 13.36 @ 104.77, crappy 60ft - 2.05 something or other. Hit a 105.25 later in the day.
It was a cool day and altitude was probably a few hundred feet below sea level. Stock tires, Shanner S1 P&P TB, 4inch MAF pipe and tune.

our car barely has a 1000 miles on it and while my husband is experienced it has been a while since he hit the track. Our 05 GTO hit 13.9, 13.7 and 13.8. We were reasonably happy with the first test run and expect to do better once we get used to the car. It was bone stock.
Others are doing 13.4 to 13.6 average.
