View Full Version : Has anyone else used Zaino after Mr. Clean Autodry?

I have, and I may have some issues with it. I used Mr. Clean before my first Zaino session of the season (Z1+Z5, then Z2 the next day, no Dawn, no claybar). When I applied the Z6 spray several days later, I noticed small swirlmarks or smears in the final direction of my towel when wiping off the Z6. I have applied 20+ coats of Zaino over the years,so I know what I am doing and I have never seen this occur. It is as if the Zaino did not bond properly to the finish. Has anyone else noticed this??:(

I have a feeling you need to follow the typical Zaino procedures before applying it...you know, the whole Dawn/claybar routine. If the paint surface isn't perfectly clean, the Zaino won't bond, so if there is any residue left over from the Mr. Clean, it ain't gonna work. That is one of the drawbacks to the Zaino process...you have to do a very thorough prep process, and it is very unforgiving if you skip steps (as you have already seen).

So this would mean you can never "stack" coats of Zaino if you ever use Mr. Clean to wash your car! That would really bite!

saw this in another post here...
Most of the complaints are that it takes too long, and you could have easily dried the car by then, sceptical on the non wax removing part, soap and filter don't last long, and leaving of residue.
so yes - if it does leave a residue.... then you will need to do a dawn wash before zaino.
no need to clay (unless you can feel contaminates on the paint).
here are some links to reviews from the other thread. these are the first 2 results posted in the threads. there are others if you go read the entire threads. doesn't look like most people are too happy with it. maybe ok for the normal guy who is not a detail nut like some of us are.

One word for this product, "piece of crap", OK three words.
If you use it the way intended, you're going to scratch your car. It barely squirts some non-sudsing soap out that they want you to then scrub. Even when you put the special soap in a bucket, it's hard to get a good lubricating suds.
Then your supposed to rinse with the regular water setting, followed by the Deionized water.
Well, imagine using a water pistol to rinse your car, it's about the rate that the deionized water flows.
I could have blow-dried the car twice in the amount of time it took with the Mr.Clean No-dry method.
I called their tech people, just to see if I had a defective unit. They said the deionizer is supposed to spray a mist. Nice for plants, but it doesn't displace the water already on the car, unless you have a spare hour to kill misting.

Anyways, it does work as advertised, but I can wash and dry the car in about half the time using a bucket and a large (3' x 3') waffle synthetic chamois (from Griot's Garage- order one, they are outstanding), and get better results. I can dry the car in under a minute using this, took at least 5-10 minutes with the sprayer, it works very slow.
Also, both times I used it, once it dries, the places that were missed stood out like a sore thumb (behind side mirrors, etc, this was on a black BMW) and had to be done again.
Some people have reported that using the Mr. Clean wash which contains some sort of dry rinse chemical like is used in automatic dish washers that leaves residue on their finish and does not wash off completely during the spot free rinse cycle on the hand held unit as the flow of water in the spot free cycle is very very weak and not strong enought to get that Mr. Clean soap off.
Some people are justing using the final spot free rinse and using their own brand of car wash, like Zaino Z-7, and not having any problems......
I can not use the Mr. Clean thingy as I have no time to wait for the car to dry on its own as I always Z-6 immediately after each wash with z-7 so I dry it by hand.

So if I understand this right, I could use regular soap and any kind of filter/deionizer as a final rinse and then just let the car dry, right?
That should produce a spot-free finish without a film left behind. Seems to be what KEVO (wonder who that is ;)) is suggesting.

Hardy, har, har. I read all those threads and came out with my head spinning. I just wanted to summarize what I thought the threads said in 12,874 pages.
