Hi all,
My girlfriend and I just bought a used 98 Vette. It does have a few bugs that I need to workout. The left headlight won't go up(I am thinking a headlight motor) does that sound right?
Also the passenger side window won't work...all I hear is a clicking sound, like it wants to work. Maybe a window motor?
Then where in the middle of the gauges there is a message service tire mon. sys. anyone have any idea what that could be????
Thanks for the help,
Jason

Ah, the elusive "Service Tire Monitoring System". Yup, I've got that too. But I'm too lazy to get it fixed. That just means that your computer can't read the air pressure in your tires. Congrats on the vette though, you'll love it.

Congrats!
It sounds like your headlight and window motor need to be replaced. And for the warning on your display, it is what Joey Walnuts said.

That's probably the easiest way to go about it. From what I have been told, all they have to do is replace the little metal valve on the tires. That's just what I've been told though, so I don't really know for sure.

It sounds like your sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. I think the sensors are around $75 each. You will have to have that sensor reprogrammed though when you replace it. Here is a link on how to reprogram it.
Tire Sensors (http://corvetteforum.com/techtips/viewsubtopic.php?SubTopicID=77&TopicID=1)
I have had trouble with my passenger side window and if I recall correctly it's around four or five hundred dollars to repair. Headlight motor is like two hundred dollars. If you bought it from a dealer (which it sounds like you didn't) ask them if they would be willing to fix it or go half towards its repair.
If you can't afford to get the window fixed right away no big deal, however the head light is.
to take care of that get your manual out and look for the instructions on how to manualy raise the head lights and put both lights in the up position untill you get it fixed.
(I believe to do this you pop the hood and next to both head lights are a couple of knobs. I can't remember if you turn them clock wise or counter clock wise to raise the lights but try clock wise first, after about ten or so turns it should move upwards, if it dosnt go in the other direction, it should be apparent fairly quickly if your doing it right. I left my manual in my desk at work or I would tell you exactly which way to turn it :( also, when you get the lights in the up position and you are lowering the hood be extreamly careful you do not hit the head lights as you lower the hood or you may cause damage, once you have completed this you will be able to safely drive at night with both lights in the up position.)

Hey, congrats on the purchase, you wont regret it. \. All the things you have mentioned you can take care of yourself. Do not go to the dealer (Stealer). I recommed hitting, www.corvetteforum.com. You will find tons of info there. Or email me or PM and I can help you out. I bought used too and been through most of the things...
1. Headlight: find out if the motor is still turning when you press it on. If it is, its just the gear and you need a replacement. If it isnt, then you need the whole motor. In any case, removing the motor is very easy. Its held on by three bolts, well plus another one in the middle that controls the raise arm. I can give you further help on that if you get to that point.
2. The passenger side window. Seems to be a common problem sometime if not used a lot. But, unlike fbbodys (owned 2), sometimes they just go into hibernation, There is a possible quick fix here: Window Link (http://corvetteforum.com/techtips/viewsubtopic.php?SubTopicID=155&TopicID=1)
3. The service tire monitoring system is just that. Millenium vette is right. Your best bet is to find out which sensors are bad. Do the reset and see which wheels your horn wont sound for. reset (http://corvetteforum.com/techtips/viewsubtopic.php?SubTopicID=77&TopicID=1). Then purchase a new one. Retail at ur dealer will be $127 or so. The best dealer out there is Ficthner Chev. They will sell you one for $85 plus shipping. Email them here (parts@fichtnerchevrolet.com) / You can also get them reconditioned, but there is only one place that does that and I cant remember, something like neocreations.com.
Congrats again. Get the little things fixed and she will be even better. Let me know if you have any questions about anything.

Thanks!!!! This is good info. A bud and I changed the passenger side window motor and assembly...it wasn't too bad at all. Took us about 2 hours...not bad for never doing it before.
The small dealer I bought the car from fixed the head light...so I am happy now. I just need to figure out which cold air intake I want.
Thanks again,
Jason

No problem. Glad you got those things fixed. As far as the intake... Probably Blackwing is your best bet. That seems to be the most popular without any serious installation problems. I personally have the Vortex Ram Air, which I had to cut into the shroud, but it really wasnt that big of deal...and let me tell you...you can feel the difference...it roars and kicks you in the butt. Blackwing should do the same, or Vaaram, with less work to get it in.
I would also recommend changing the plugs and wires. Most people use the NDK TR55's or the irridums (they last longer). Get a good wire set too, although with the small run, it wont matter much. I would go with Taylor Thundervolts or Accells...
And oh, I bought my 98 a few months ago...75k miles on it...curious how much you paid. You dont want to know how much i did.

The thundervolts are 10.4mm right? I bought it with LT's and I am wondering about header and wire clearence.

Wouldnt be able to help u there with header clearence... not my area.
I bought mine from a dealer who was wanting to make some quick cash (took vette as a trade). I happened to be first in line when he started making phone calls. He told me if I had cash, he wanted it gone (he didnt deal in vettes); give it to me cheap. I said...I B right there!!!! Got there and negotiated it to $15.8 cause it was an A4 and I didnt like that...:) yeah right

Looks just like mine...I had to finance it through them, cause of a BK about a year ago. The interest sucks, but in about 6-8 months I will try to get a better rate through someone else.
Looks Good.

You don't need to cut the Fan Shroud if you order the Precut Shroud from Ecklers for $74.99.
