View Full Version : Broken/Worn Posi Symptoms?

Short of jacking the car up and spinning the tires, or doing a burnout, are there any symptoms I can expect to see if my posi is shot?

The car feels different going thru corners/semi-hard launching. Seems like when I would normally tap the gas mid corner it would try to rotate, but even in the rain, it didnt try to come around, just kinda felt like it didn't change at all.

Thanks for any help or input you all may have.

When my posi went out everytime I made a right turn it sounded like the tire was dragging. Didn't happen on left turns. Of course at the track I was doing one tire burnouts after that broke :D

Hmm, doesn't particularly sound like it's dragging, but I'll get a slight pop, or bump noise when I go in reverse. (I think) It doesn't happen all the time, and I haven't specifically found what makes it do that.... so it may be completely unrelated.

I guess the burnout's gonna have to be my test. :D

I'm nto sure of the exact test, but for a friction based posi in your 98, there is a way to raise one wheel from the ground leave trans in neutral & use a torque wrench on the lugs to see how much tq. it takes to overcome the posi friction & spin that axle. I don't know the tq. spec, but comparing it to a known good posi car (non Torsen!!) would be relevant.

That is for testing the friction, not a physically broken carrier.
