are SLP headers and ory really as bad as people make them out to be? is it just clearance and installation problems or is there a lack of good dyno #'s and coating issues? :feedback:

the clearance is horrible, install isnt that hard but its more difficult than most! as far as flow you will find about 1/2 and 1/2 of people who get good #'s and those who dont! just looking at the design they are way too curvy and looks like it wouldnt flow but who knows. i have seen them rust and even crack in some cases but others have done the same! to sum this up for you there are a whole lot cheaper yet better products out there so dont waste your money on slp's, just my .02 cents though:D

I still dont understand why people still consider these unless the have an SS and want to stay all SLP. They are expensive, hard to install, and have poor clearance.

I got a great increase in power with the SLP headers, and the install wasn't any worse than any other header. There is a slight decrease in clearance, but not as drastic as everyone says. My results were 25hp 23 ft-lb on the dyno from headers and off-road Y-pipe.

The main reason I got them is a guy traded in his SS before installing them. So I paid $900 or so for SLP headers, Y-pipe, off road pipes, o2 sims and install kit.

Other then the ground clearance I have no problems with them.

there's better choices- Pacesetters for roughly $400-Hookers for $550 and Kooks and FLP's on the high side

well i was inquiring only because someone offered me the headers with the ory in a month for $350 when he takes them off, just wondering if i should do that or just pay the extra money for hookers

they make awesome power from what i see in my buddies car and how it runs 12.1 @114 with full weight, bolt ons and stock TC(jersey_ta) but he IS having problems with his coating but its getting fixed under warrenty

if u consider lowering ur car...forget it

if there in good condition pick them, and sell them to an slp fan who is willing to pay top dollar for them ;). then take the money and buy some jethot/hookers or kooks/qtp

I recently installed my first set of SLP's on a customers car and have never encountered a header that was such a PITA to install and that had such terrible ground clearence.

I would only buy these if you are getting a killer deal. They got theirs for 180$

The "trick" to installing the SLPs is to lower the engine cradle a little. This will give you enough room to rotate the headers into place and then bolt it back up. When it comes to LS1 headers they are by far the most popular that we carry. It would be nice if they tucked up a little closer but I rather watch for speed bumps over listening to them hit the floor all of the time. Had alot of problems with the FLP headers doing this.

If your looking for "lower cost" headers we just started listing the FlowTechs. I'll be posting some info about these soon.

that is a pretty good price on those slp's you should buy them and resale them and make a little profit:D

I really like my SLP headers......the clearance issue is only noticeable on really bad speed bumps, or if I have several people in the car and go over a bad incline or something.

how is ur coating holding up and what are ur power #'s?

I have the SLP longtubes and off road pipe on my 2001 Z28. I also have my car lowered. I think Ive got about 2" of ground clearance. Ive got a dent on my drivers side collector from a nasty object in the road.

Oh well, I guess I expected it... but they were expensive. My car made 434rwhp with my forged heads/cam motor. This was also only running with 21 degrees timing. Im sure if I bumped more timing I could see an extra 20rwhp or so. But, I need to spray and be safe...

I agree that the SLP longtubes leave a lot to be desired. I think they have too many bends and have you noticed how short the collectors are? They cost too damn much also. Stainless Steel is nice, but damn. :(

The coating looks pretty good well over a year later. I didn't dyno my car stock, so I don't have good comparisons. :(

Since my sig isn't working...............my performance mods are lid, Borla, SLP LT's, SLP y-pipe, Random Tech cats, SLP CAI, 3200 Vig TC, and I put down 331/338. That is through my A4 with 2.73s.

I also have the SLP LT's. I don't have any issues with mine either. Install wasn't bad. We did have a lift and lowered the engine cradle as Tom mentioned earlier. I have 3 1/2" clearance. I gained 30 rwhp and 25 rwtq with them. After two years coating still looks like new and they sound great. here's a link to the install:
