My first guess would be the tensioner pulley but you changed that already. I have also seen an alternator have a bad bearing and squeal real bad too. It takes time and a lot of patience to find out what it is. Sometimes you can feel the pulleys and find out which one has the most vibration, otherwise take the belt out and spin all them by hand and see what you can find. Best of luck to you!

Alt, or maybe the Pump!!! Check for leaks from the water pump!!

pull one belt and start it. if that isn't it, reinstall and remove the other belt and start it.

you can narrow it down to which accessory it is pretty easily.

do you have any ram air mods? what your hearing may not be a squeal but a whistle.

No I don't have any ram air mods. My car is mostly stock. Just have a lid, and a little bit of exhaust work.

How can I pull one belt? I only have one belt that runs everything.

Edit: I checked for water pump leaks and it doesn't sound like it's comming from the water pump. It sounds like it's comming from somewhere towards the bottom of the engine.

I think JMD is refering to some imports that have multiple belts. I had a squeal myself and I changed the factory belt to a goodyear gatorback one and it solved the problem 100%, I guess I was lucky.

Yeah I had a bearing go bad in my alternator, it wasn't really a squeel more of a clanking. Now I have a really loud squeel. I think I know which pulley it is just don't have the funds to replace it at the moment doh.

My alternator just locked up and tore up my belt hardcore today in my 1985 Caprice. Smelled pretty foul I might add. Man that car can be embarassing... :D

its probably your AC Belt tensionor. Same thing was happeing to me so I just got under there took off both belts. and removed the dang thing. Ill get a new one once the weather starts to get warmer.
My guess is. since its low to the ground it gets water on it and that makes it go bad. :dunno: anyways, I also got the Thunder Racing NON adjustable belt tension and that got rid of my idele speed squeaking. Now im squeak free and loving it :)

did you replace the entire tensioner or just the pulley? I think the squeal on my old ride turned out to be the ac tensioner which is down by the bottom:)

I replaced the entire tensioner. It was 70 bucks from the dealer. Easy to do. Just two bolts hold it on. I hope it's not my A/C compressor. I can't afford to replace that right now.

If you do need a new compressor you should look on the for sale section of a certain site that will remain nameless. Hate to send you there, but I have seen them in the for sale section pretty cheap. Good luck!!!

if you have a long screwdriver, or metal pipe, **CAREFULLY** hold it againts each belt driven component as the car is running. Place the other end of the screwdriver/pipe to your ear. this should quickly indicate whether or not the noise comes from one.

I tried that with a ratchet extention I have. All I could tell is that the noise wasn't comming from any of the pullies I could reach. Here's what I did discover though. There is no squeal at idle. Only at throttle..It's got me baffled

Does your A/C work  Take a close look at your A/C pump. Your car should have one large 6 rib belt and a small one that runs your A/C pump only. Its located on the bottom left hand side of the engine.

My car makes the same sound and I sprayed WD-40 on the small belt and it went away for a couple of days. So I know it is either the small belt, or one of the pullies it runs.

Black 99 Bird, You sir are correct. And thanks to you, I found the squeal. I stopped by Auto Zone on the way home and picked up a new belt. The old one was worn the hell out. Thanks alot.

I wish I was as lucky as you...right now I have the whole front of the engine pulled off b/c of a squeal/squeak. At first it was the altenator, replaced that. Came back in a couple of days and now I think its the water pump. Should have it all back together tonight. I've been chasing this for two weeks.
