ok, heres the deal. Im an auto insurance adjuster, so I have tons of body shop connections with good painters.
my deal is, I want to lay the flames out myself. I know what kind of tape to use, and have it readily available.....has anyone ever laid flames out yourself?
do you do it freehand? or are there stencils you use?
if you have been on LS1tech.com, theres someone over there named "zangel" and her flames look completely bad ass. thats the basic design I want to use.
I will lay them out, and then let the painter tape off the car and do the actual shooting of the paint.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

thank you very much! :D
I did alot of research before finding the flames. The guy who did my flames has been doing it for 25 years and does everything by freehand. He won 3rd place in this years House of Kolor awards. Pat is definately known all over the US for his art skills. Laying the flames is usually the hardest part. Every artist has their own touch but I have never seen an artist use a stencil. I am sure you could find something to go by, but it certainly isn't going to be easy. Good luck with your car and let me know how it turns out!

Just had ghost flames done to mine and they were laid out freehand.

I'm guessing Maxwell did your flames.
We had a guy named Rodney Hutchinson from Total Kaos do the flamework on our 3rd gen. He laid half the car out in flames then pounced a pattern for the reverse side. Our flames were done because we were traveling the ISCA show car circuit at that time.
As Zangel said, each painter has his own flame design. Some people just don't do flames very good. We were very picky about how we wanted the licks to look.

mine were laid by hand by Joe Plunkett here in the chicago area.
i too was picky about how i wanted them, but let joe go after giving him a general idea of the shape, lentgh and picking the colors to blend in them. House of Kolor Candy paints used.

you are very welcome. your car looks incredible. I hate to copy someone elses car, but daum, thats EXACTLY what I want on my TA.
if I just took my car to the same dude that did yours, what would it cost me?
I want someone reputable, and the more I look, and think about it, the more I realize im probably not capable of laying them out.
:)
If you've never laid flames before I'd suggest having someone else do it

Honestly, Pat isn't cheap but you get what you pay for. He doesn't do the clear coat, so you will have to find someone else to that for you. The cost of the flames really depend on what you are looking for. The basic flame job starts at $1500 and goes up the more detail/colors you add. The type of flame that you want to do also adds to the cost... there are many styles to choose from. I went with a thick old style flame job. I have a total of 6 colors in my fade and also added pinstripping on top of that. Like I said before, it won't be cheap but you want something that you will be happy with because you are going to see them every day for a really long time! Remember, if you take the picture to someone else, the flames will never look exactly the same. Every artist adds their own detail, even if they are using another picture for reference... it is like a trademark. If you would like to talk to Maxwell about doing your flames, let me know and I will send you his information.

Yep, I understand how you would like to have a hand in it, but from my experience it's a lot harder than it looks. I've attempted it several times on smaller projects and they always turn out like crap.
If you really want to though, get plenty of the tape and give it a few practice runs.
