Ok so I am a big, big fan of the LS1. I have seen a that it is becoming very popular to doo a third gen LS1 swap.
So my question to you guys is, do you think that it is worth doing an LS1 swap in my third gen camaro (88' Iroc with the sb 350)

The thing about doing a late model swap is that the engine has fewer miles and doesn't need rebuilt. If you stick with the 1988 EFI and rebuild an engine, you're up there in cost $ with the LS1 swap if you start upgrading heads etc. I definitely would like to do an LS1 swap on my ride, but it's not in the budget at this point.

Depends on what your after, LS1 has a lot of potential, I see pleny now a days that hit 400 cam only and back it up with real fast traps. Its a lot of work, but thats part of the fun I supose. :)

Lots of fab work but alot more potential
I was thinking about doing this swap in my '84. Can it be done for less than $5000? Engine and T56 trans?

not any more. you can buy the motor mounts and trans crossmember, as well as wiring harness for damn near a straight drop in.

Hey bro I have a 1987 Iroc with an LS1 and Viper spec T56 in it. I got the motor for 2g's with wiring harness and everything. Picked up the tranny with centerforce flywheel, spec stage 3 clutch, and pro 5.0 shifter for $1000 (hehe gotta love awesome deals) Everything was documented under 1500 miles. If you do it use the Street and Performance motor mount adapters. Allows you to use your stock motor mounts so it's a direct bolt in. Spohn sells a crossmember for the T56 and f-body motorsports has a fuel line kit already setup to adapt to the fuel rails. I need to get my new pics up here but here's an old test fit pic, oh and the motor isn't stock :) also have a T76 turbo kit I'm setting up on her.

You can see the plates in between the motor mount and the motor. She was originally a 305 TPI with a 700R-4
Worth every penny on the swap and I have an easy 4-5inches of clearance from the back of the motor to the firewall.

It's going to cost you at least 5 large, as for peformance, I ASSUME it would be faster than a 4th gen LS1 simply because the 3rd gens are ligher.
Advantages = Lighter, faster, superior fuel economy
disadvantage = more work needed to swap in rather than an LT1 which drops right in.'
If you got the money, I would do it. Third gen LS1's are badass.

I think the LS1 swap is worth the money. You'll add up atleast $5,000 trying to get your 305 or 350 3rd gen to the stock status of a LS1. I know that right now I have about $6000 in my 92 RS 350 TBI and have only ran low 14's - high 13's. My stock 99 z28 m6 ran high 13's. IMO it is well worth the money.

Stay with the tpi dude! How fast do you want to go? I got my 91 Z28 to 11.32 for under 5k. Wanna know how?

It cost me $8K plus when you include every little part but the payoff was worth it, 12.96 @ 108 with drag radials cutting 1.96 60FT. This is with stock motor and Yank 2600 stall putting down 311 to the wheels.
